Horizon Academy

Horizon Academy

Since 1998, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter has provided children from trauma a safe, nurturing environment with our on-site school, Horizon Academy. Students benefit from small classroom sizes taught by state-certified teachers trained in meeting the unique needs of children who have experienced trauma.

During a child’s stay at the Shelter, their individualized education is a top priority. Many children who come to the Shelter have experienced significant educational setbacks or neglect. Immediately upon entering the classroom, certified teaching staff assess the child for any potential gaps, delays or learning difficulties. Any identified educational issues lead to the formation of a customized educational plan that establishes goals to be academically successful at their next school. The low student-to-teacher ratio allows teachers to tailor instruction to each individual child’s needs. For some students, this may be their first positive experience in school. Positive educational experiences can lead to increased feelings of self-esteem and personal worth that many children who have experienced trauma lack.

By allowing students to remain in the Shelter’s secure atmosphere rather than attend a large public school, children acclimate to their new surroundings faster and gain a sense of security during a stressful transition time. While attending school on-site, students encounter familiar faces, expectations and surroundings. NWACS policy requires all employees to be trained in trauma awareness using the integrated behavior management system, Trust Based Relational Intervention. This policy ensures that their unique needs are understood and supported. Further, students have access to the specialized services of a full-time, certified special education teacher, as well as specialists in speech, occupational and/or physical therapy.

Having a school integrated with the Shelter also eliminates logistical issues and distractions that would interrupt the child’s typical public school day. All of these on-site education advantages assist NWACS students to focus on their studies, as well as their healing.

Meet Demonte

Recently, we had an intelligent, hard-working young man in our care. His name was Demonte* and he was 15 years old. One day, he got upset in class and took off out of the building like he was planning to run away. This is not an uncommon reaction from the children in our care. Many have been taught that their only two options, when circumstances are beyond their control, are fight or flight. This time, Demonte chose flight.
Lisa, one of our amazing Youth Care Specialists, followed after him and was calling out his name to stop him from walking away. Finally, he did stop and Lisa was able to convince him to return. Later that afternoon, when he was talking through what had happened, he said, “When I heard Mrs. Lisa saying my name, it made me realize that no one in my family or in my life would ever have cared if I ran away. The only reason I stopped is because I knew Mrs. Lisa must care about me because she came after me.”
This is just one story, among hundreds each year, that shows how much our youth care staff impact the children in our care – every day. It is an honor to be here for these kids when they need us the most.

While at the Shelter, I got to do two things for the first time – roller skating and bowling!

Sharee, age 12

I like the Shelter because we get new stuff, like clothes, and we get to go outside and play kickball.

Adam, age 6

This place has made me feel the most at home. What makes it so special is the staff. I have never met such caring and dedicated staff.

Katie, age 14
