Horizon Academy

Horizon Academy

Since 1998, the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter has provided children from trauma a safe, nurturing environment with our on-site school, Horizon Academy. Students benefit from small classroom sizes taught by state-certified teachers trained in meeting the unique needs of children who have experienced trauma.

During a child’s stay at the Shelter, their individualized education is a top priority. Many children who come to the Shelter have experienced significant educational setbacks or neglect. Immediately upon entering the classroom, certified teaching staff assess the child for any potential gaps, delays or learning difficulties. Any identified educational issues lead to the formation of a customized educational plan that establishes goals to be academically successful at their next school. The low student-to-teacher ratio allows teachers to tailor instruction to each individual child’s needs. For some students, this may be their first positive experience in school. Positive educational experiences can lead to increased feelings of self-esteem and personal worth that many children who have experienced trauma lack.

By allowing students to remain in the Shelter’s secure atmosphere rather than attend a large public school, children acclimate to their new surroundings faster and gain a sense of security during a stressful transition time. While attending school on-site, students encounter familiar faces, expectations and surroundings. NWACS policy requires all employees to be trained in trauma awareness using the integrated behavior management system, Trust Based Relational Intervention. This policy ensures that their unique needs are understood and supported. Further, students have access to the specialized services of a full-time, certified special education teacher, as well as specialists in speech, occupational and/or physical therapy.

Having a school integrated with the Shelter also eliminates logistical issues and distractions that would interrupt the child’s typical public school day. All of these on-site education advantages assist NWACS students to focus on their studies, as well as their healing.

Meet Lola

This young lady has been with us for more than two months. When she first arrived, she could only count to 8 and didn’t recognize numbers above 5 by sight. She also only knew about 6 letters and no sounds. She attends school on-site here at the Shelter and is in Ms. Anaiya’s elementary class. By the end of the first quarter of the school year, she can now count to 30 and identifies numbers up to 20 when shown out of sequence. She also knows 24 letters and matching sounds! This sweet girl is overcoming memory issues and a language delay. Her hard work, along with the patience and caring of Ms. Anaiya, have allowed her to make huge progress. We are so proud of her!

While at the Shelter, I got to do two things for the first time – roller skating and bowling!

Sharee, age 12

Thanks you NWACS, I now have a bright and successful future. I can’t say thank you enough and I will never forget the amazing people here.

Sammy, age 16

The best thing that I love about the Shelter is the acceptance. No matter where any of us came from, we are accepted here.

Melanie, age 15
